I recently got back from a week-long bootcamp in Northampton, training with Lee Andrew and his team of ex-military trainers.
Before I went, I wasn’t really sold on the idea of a bootcamp. It brought back frankly disturbing memories of training at Sandhurst, and I am cocky enough to think that I didn’t need it.
Which of course was an abject lie – by the time I embarked on my week of pain-slash-fun (seriously), I hadn’t really trained properly in over a month, and was starting to loose all manner of gym-going confidence. Not to mention, muscles.
So I went. The first thing we did was get weighed and measured. The two trainers systematically took caliper measurements from our triceps, biceps and waist, and recorded our weight. I had already decided I didn’t care about the weight – in fact, I suspected I might even gain weight (muscle weighs more than fat, afterall). Not to give the game away, but I lost 5lb and a load of body fat. Hurrah.
If I’m honest, though, I wasn’t really at Hybrid for weightloss – I was there to get my fitness back. So I sort of just had to get on with the baptism of fire than was 6am starts, 3 x 1.5hr sessions before lunch, and daily two minute ice baths. Obviously I winged consistently throughout my week there. By the end I actually felt a bit sorry for Lee, Danny and Ben. I really was pleased to be there – promise.
In the evenings, we had a series of nutrition talks from Lee, who set about shattering myths and disproving fads, whilst educating us all about nutrition labels. I was shocked – I’d been doing basic things wrong for years. Oops.
Hybrid runs week-long bootcamps from a serene farm (inc beaut grounds, luxe bathrooms and an outdoor hottub – just saying…) in Northampton, throughout the year. They’ve also just launched a centre in Marbella. Obviously I plan to try that one – balanced research and all that….
To book, visit their website. Also – my beaut kit is by Varley & JD Sport.
